What's new on the blog

November 10, 2019

I may not have a huge amount of experience with homeschooling just yet, but I am amazed at how much I have learnt this year! The thought of homeschooling your children can be one of the most overwhelming things that you come across in your life as a parent.

Thinking back to my schooling years, I feel like I retained nothing, but coming alongside my own children in their learning, I have discovered a renewed passion for learning.

Honestly, I now love our days. Gone are the rushed school mornings of getting dressed, hair done, eating breakfa...

Lately I have met many other parents who have mentioned that they have been considering home-schooling for one reason or another. Believe it or not, home-schooling is steadily on the rise here in Australia and according to estimates, the number of families in NSW alone has risen by approximately 70% since 2014. You can read more about that on SBS.

People choose to home-school for a variety of reasons with the main reasons including religious beliefs, bullying, anxiety and the belief that they can give their child more than the current scho...

Getting kids reading can be a challenge. I expect my kids to read every day but lately it has become a bit more of a chore for them. Instead of "Yay, we get to read!" it has become "Why do we have to read? Can't we just play?"

I knew it was time to make a change to get them loving reading again. Our routine had been for the girls to read at night time before bed for at least half an hour. I would get the kids in their pyjamas and we would all curl up together in the lounge room and read books from our collection and the library. After they had...

When I woke on January 1st of this year, I was excited about the goals and plans that I had ahead of me. I was going to launch my very first book, start speaking tours, grow my blogs further, get started on my second book and run a half marathon!

And then my daughter approached me with the idea of being schooled at home!

I'm sure the surprised look on my face that said "you've got to be kidding me" said it all but apparently my daughter didn't read that far into it....

My answer was a large, loud "No."

I didn't think I was a home school-type paren...

Now that I'm a home-school mum I find that my brain has taken on a new level of crazy. Before I had all the normal mum things to think about, whereas now I also have lesson plans and how to keep the kids interested during their daily lessons. I am also dreaming lesson ideas. Yep, I've completely lost it!

In Australia, the science curriculum for early primary includes learning about living things (so put away all those printables for vampires and zombies LOL).

Here at home we have had a lot of fun learning about plants, animals and even our own b...

There's nothing like inspiring the love of geography than sending a stuffed animal out into the world! Salty Croc, our geopet, tugged at heart strings (not mine), drew smiles and gathered a crowd as he set off for his world adventure today. If you don't know what a geopet is take a quick look at "Meet Salty, our Geopet".

With Salty was a journal for his travelling companions to leave notes of his adventures, a nice little sleeping bag pocket for him to snuggle in (made out of a pair of my jeans) and a pen.

The morning passed without too much dr...

So for those of you who read my last post, I am now an accidental home-schooler! Yep, I know, I was shocked too. See, I'm that mum that is super excited for the first day of school just so I can push my kids out of the car and tear off down the road with dust in my tracks. And then this happened...

Yeah, the short story is that my eldest decided change was in order and the next thing I knew, I was sitting in my home planning curriculum for my now 24/7 children.

Recently, after deciding that this home-schooling thing could be really fun, I got in...

A few weeks ago I was envisaging my year and what I was planning on accomplishing, when all of a sudden my eldest daughter decided that some drama was needed. Out of the blue she decided that school was from the pit of hell and just refused to go back. Now I'm talking 0 to 100 in panic mode from a child happy to go to school just the week before!

Feeling completely caught off guard, I did what every sensible parent would do and I ignored her and sent her to school. (Parent of the year!) Anyways, turns out that didn't help and by the following d...
